INAV Autotune Tutorial for Airplanes

How to use INAV Autotune

Autotune is a feature in the INAV flight controller firmware that helps automatically tune PID settings for fixed-wing aircraft. It simplifies the tuning process by adjusting roll, pitch, and yaw rates based on flight behavior.

How It Works:

  • When enabled, Autotune learns how the aircraft responds to control inputs.
  • The pilot performs aggressive roll and pitch maneuvers to allow INAV to analyze the aircraft’s movement.
  • The system then adjusts PID values to optimize flight stability and responsiveness

Autotune (or Auto Tune) that is present in INAV for quite a long time is a working solution for tuning PID (or rather PIFF) controller used by INAV on fixed wings (all airplanes, flying wings). Not like all the attempts designed for multirotors, this one actually works.

INAV Autotune can be used on any airplane and is fairly simple to use as long as you follow a few simple steps:

The procedure is:

  • Take Off
  • Switch to Acro
  • Enable Autotune
  • Fly
  • Disable Autotune
  • Land
  • Disarm
  • Save new rates and feed forward gains
