Google has announced that it is sunsetting Firebase Studio, its browser-based integrated development environment, in favor of coding tools built around AI. The company said in March that the move would streamline its development workflow and make it clearer where developers should begin building. New workspaces and sign-ups for Firebase Studio closed on June 22, and developers have until March 22, 2027 to move their projects to another IDE before the service is shut down and remaining data is deleted.

Firebase Studio was launched in 2025 as a coding tool linked to Firebase, the backend services platform that covers databases and web hosting. Its AI chatbot can prototype and adjust apps, but most of the product still centers on editing code. Today many projects begin with a prompt, and vibe coding has led some users to avoid raw code altogether, which Google says its newer tools are built to handle.

For developers who want to stay within Google's ecosystem, the two main options are Google AI Studio and Antigravity. AI Studio is web-based and focuses on prompts and chatting with AI, while Antigravity is a desktop app that runs locally, letting users work with code and oversee several AI agents. Antigravity also supports models from other providers. Other options include Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex, and cost, whether subscriptions or token fees, may weigh heavily in the choice.
