OpenBSD 8.0 Released With Install Options for Many Hardware Platforms

OpenBSD 8.0 is now available, with installation guides for a wide range of architectures and source archives for those who want to build or track the system themselves.

The release page for OpenBSD 8.0 lists new features and systems only in part and points readers to the full changelog for the complete picture. Pre-built packages are provided for each supported architecture.

Installation methods depend on the hardware. On many machines users can write an ISO image to a CD or a disk image to a USB stick and boot from it. Where that is not possible, PXE network installation is described for amd64 and i386. Other platforms have their own routes: SD card miniroot images with a serial console for some ARM systems, network booting for hppa and octeon, Petitboot with a USB stick for powerpc64, and a USB stick plus the bundled microSD card for the HiFive Unmatched on riscv64. The page also covers older platforms such as sparc64, macppc and luna88k. Each platform has an INSTALL file with details, and the page advises reading it if anything is unclear.

People already running OpenBSD 7.9 can follow the Upgrade Guide instead of reinstalling.

Source code is offered as separate archives. The src.tar.gz file holds the main source tree without kernel sources, while sys.tar.gz contains the kernel sources. Both are regular CVS checkouts, which makes a first update through the anoncvs servers much faster than a fresh checkout. A ports tree archive is also available, and users who follow the -stable branch can update it with CVS. Most ports are already offered as packages, and updated ports for 8.0 will be released if problems arise.
